The Writing Line-up:
Gary Smillie - Poetry
'I am trying to keep the writing coming, although
training as an English teacher is a full time
concern at the moment. I think I willl be
performing 4 new poems at the spotlight this
time, I may try to pen one or two more as I am
currently on my easter break. Really looking
forward to performing at the spotlight again, of
course. there will be mix of dark humour,
philosophical ponderings and even a love poem
in the mix.'
Steeve The Poet - Poetry
One of Spotlight's longest-standing performers, Steeve The
Poet says:
'I am a humble woodcutter living in a village on the edge of Manchester called Moss Side. At Spotlight I will be performing a poem about poems, a sham expose on the confrontational world of the poetry slam, and compulsive illiteration, internal rhymes and rhythm.'
Alan Swift - Poetry
Another long-standing supporter, performer and stalwart of Spotlight, Alan Swift steps up to the mic with a selection of pithy poems on subjects as diverse as local Jazz, the joys of steam, perverse sexual practices and the delights of Morecambe.
Pascal Desmond - Stilm (a still film!)
'Welsh STDs', a stilm [a still film] by Pascal the Rascal, is a journey of discovery deep into the underbelly of north Wales, i.e. Cornwall, taking in train travel, seating, vandalism, construction, demolition and chimneys. It considers the whole idea of wholesomeness and whether holes should be dug or filled and with what. It explores, in a vaguely humorous way the Law of Unintended Consequences but, knowing Pascal, he will forget to mention that. Because he called the stilm
'Welsh STDs', he shows his age; these days they're called STIs.
Pascal the Rascal is an Ordained Humorist and Multimedia Performance Artist who writes the odd anecdote, bad poems and appalling songs. His singing is reminiscent of Chris de Burgh’s (particularly the occasion when de Burgh tried – and failed – to sing ‘Lady in Red’ live on Top of the Pops). His DIY speciality is demolition…
'Happiness is slapping concrete with a sledgehammer.'
And Music:
Dan Haywood's New Hawks - Music
New Hawks is an arching, tragi-cosmik song-cycle by Dan Haywood (formerly of 'promising' alternative-rockers The Puma-Sutras, and creator of period fantasy 'Dapple'. Dan wrote the twenty-nine New Hawks (songs) in a month-long burst awhile back.
'It was a shocker.'
Aided by a host of kind, talented musicians, including Therese Standish (strings), Jeff Jefferson and Billy Myall (rack) - New Hawks are now being brought to a venue near you and, scratching and screeching, into the stoooodio.
Dan Haywood's New Hawks EP, (Timbreland via Forte Distribution) came out in October 2007.
