The Next Spotlight

Will Be At

The Storey

September 18th

We are shell-shocked that Arts Council England have turned down Spotlight's bid for renewed two-year funding. Despite meeting all five requirements the reason given was 'comparitively weaker artistic quality' in relation to other funding bids.

We have spoken to Arts Council England and Spotlight's failure to secure renewed funding is down to the high level of competition for increasingly low available funds.

We are looking at other avenues of funding but will be reapplying to ACE immediately. We are very keen to try to reinstate funding but as we know, there are no guarantees.

It would assist us in our bid to re-instate funding if you could make a short email statement about what Spotlight means or has meant to you as a writer/musican, performer or as audience and mailto:

There will be no Spotlight event at The Storey in August as we are taking a planned break after which we have sufficient funding reserves to continue the event at The Storey until December - which, with cheerful irony, will be the 20th anniversary of the first ever Spotlight.

Hunting Originals

Spotlight is a cave of ideas,
always on the hunt for new and
experimental writers and
performers at it's
Open Mic spots.

On the 3rd Friday of every
month the event gives a
platform to poets, writers,
comedians, ranters and

It's a dynamic platform on
which a wide variety of aspiring
writers are positively encouraged to experiment with words,
music and performance.

  Each Spotlight event opens with
an Open Mic session (8.30 -
  9.00pm) featuring six 5 minute
spots open to anyone. As these
are very popular you may want
to e-mail to book an Open Mic
  spot in advance:
  Plus: Open Mic performers are
  admitted half-price!

  Following the Open Mic session,
  Spotlight showcase 4 different
writers and 2 music acts which
feature some of the best writing
  and musicianship in the region!
